Lady Cougars capture conference season opener with late second half surge

For the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Barton Community College women's basketball team opened Jayhawk Conference play with a victory as the Lady Cougars controlled the last ten minutes of Saturday night's conference opener to pull away for a 76-66 win over Pratt Community College.  Barton used a modest 4-0 run to breaking open the game's ninth and final tie with 9:56 to play and never let Pratt get any closer than three the rest of the way.  The Lady Cougars' victory improves the team overall record to 13-4 while dropping Pratt to 13-4.  Barton will seek its second conference victory on Wednesday as the Lady Cougars host Dodge City Community College at 5:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym.

Kailai Brantner scored sixteen of her eighteen points to lead the Lady Cougars in scoring with eighteen.  Mariana Lambert, who celebrated her birthday in the victory, scored ten in the second frame to finish with seventeen.  Taylor Mayes contributed eleven thanks to some clutch mid-range jumpers while Cheyenne Hedrington finished with ten.  Brantner led with three assists while Phikala Anthony came off the bench to lead Barton with nine rebounds.

Pratt had only three players in double-digit scoring with two of the players recording double-doubles.  Tatiana Grant scored a game high twenty-four points with ten rebounds while Elle Stein scored nineteen and hauled down sixteen rebounds, ten coming on the offensive glass.  Karissa Pena came off the bench to add ten in twenty-four minutes of action.
