Lady Cougars fall late to top ranked Hutchinson
The Barton Community College womenâs basketball team gave the top ranked team in the nation more than expected, as Hutchinson Community College pulled away in the last three minutes to defeat the Lady Cougars 65-56 Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Down by fourteen with nine minutes to play, the Lady Cougars were within two with 3:30 left before Hutchinson outscored Barton 9-3 down the stretch for the win. With the loss Barton drops to 1-4 in the Jayhawk West and 11-7 overall while No. 1 Hutchinson improves to 4-0 in conference and 18-0 overall. Barton will have a week off from action before hosting Colby Community College in a 5:30 p.m. Jayhawk contest on Wednesday January 23 at the Barton Gym.
Taschell Phillips led Barton with sixteen points while Erin Copeland scored thirteen to lead the Lady Cougars in accounting for twenty-nine of the team's fifty-six points. The duo was 11-for-23 from the field while the rest of the Lady Cougars were 9-of-34. From the free throw line the pair combined for 5-of-7 with the rest of the team going 6-of-11. Ashton Bruner, who leads Barton in scoring but was fighting illness, finished with only four points but led all players in the contest with eleven rebounds.
Aja Sorrells scored fourteen of her twenty points in the second half to lead the Lady Dragons. Jasmine Patterson, who also had a big second half, scored sixteen while leading Hutchinson in rebounds with nine.
