Second time not the charm for Lady Cougars in home loss to Hutchinson
Wednesday was a record setting night at the Barton Gym but unfortunately for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team it will be records they would likely forget. Jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the No. 3 nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College never looked back in cruising to the 104-64 victory. Having played to a nine-point decision earlier in the season and having trailed by only two late in the contest, the Lady Cougars were simply in the way of a determined Hutchinson team. The loss continues Barton’s seven-game slide in dropping to 2-11 in conference play and 12-14 overall while Hutchinson improves to 11-1 and 25-1 overall. Concluding their brutal four-game seven-day portion of their Jayhawk West schedule, Barton will have a week away from completion until February 20 when the Lady Cougars travel to Colby Community College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Colby Community Building.
The forty-point margin was the largest in the series since Barton defeated the Lady Dragons by thirty-nine in 1986 and eclipsed the highest combined score surpassing the 1981 meeting when Barton won 85-76. The game also marked the first time in the series history either team surpassed the century mark and the most scored since Barton put up ninety-six back in 1992 and 1983. Hutchinson has now won eight straight against the Lady Cougars with Barton holding the most consecutive at fourteen set in the 1988-94 seasons.
Barton's seven game losing streak also surpasses the longest in school history which has been set three times, the latest coming in the 2003-04 season.
Erin Copeland's twenty points tied her career high for the second straight game and eleventh consecutive game she has reached double-figures. Blair Bloomfield scored thirteen points to reach double figures for the seventh time in the past eight games.
Jen'Von'Ta Hill scored a career high twenty-six to lead three Lady Dragons in double-digit scoring with four others scoring seven or more points. Aja Sorrells added fifteen while leading Hutchinson with six rebounds and Jasmine Patterson scored fourteen.
