Lady Cougars’ upset bid falls short
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team battled from behind most of the night but just couldn’t get over the hump in dropping a 62-55 decision to Cloud County Community College Wednesday at the Barton Gym. Tied at 43 with 6:34 to play, the Lady T-birds went on a 7-0 run in the following minute to provide the final separation to hold off Barton to remain tied with Garden City for second place in the Jayhawk West standings. The loss drops Barton to seventh place in the standings at 2-6 and 12-9 overall while Cloud improves to 6-2 and 16-6 overall. The Lady Cougars begin the second half of the conference season on Saturday as they host Seward County Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.
Erin Copeland continues to be the Lady Cougars main threat since conference play began as she put up a career high twenty points while also dishing out four assists and five steals. Coming off the bench, Taschell Phillips was the only other Lady Cougar in double-digit scoring with eleven points. Ta'Kerra Williams tied for game honors in rebounding grabbing twelve with eight of those coming on the offensive glass.
Aleesha Coulter led three Lady T-birds in double digits scoring fifteen, nine coming from behind the arc on 3-of-10 shooting. Jayna Smith scored fourteen while Pearlrae Thomas recorded a double-double with her ten point twelve rebound performance.
