Cold first half shooting dooms Barton women in loss to Butler
A cold first half shooting for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team was too much to overcome in Saturday’s 74-56 loss at the Barton Gym to Butler Community College. Shooting just twenty-nine percent in the first half, the Lady Cougars played Butler even in the second half in dropping to 1-3 in the Jayhawk West and 11-6 overall. Butler, which dropped their first two conference games to nationally ranked opponents, improve to 1-2 and 13-4 overall. The Lady Cougars return to the conference road on Wednesday to take on No. 1 ranked Hutchinson Community College in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Erin Copeland led the Lady Cougars with fourteen points and four assists, her second straight game in double-figures as the sophomore is averaging ten points per game in conference play. Ta'Kerra Williams' twelve points was the only other Lady Cougar in double figures and led the teal with three blocks and three steals. Ashton Bruner put up double digits in rebounding to lead all players with eleven.
Ashlee Ivy's fifteen points led a balanced Butler attack as four Lady Grizzlies scored in double-digits. Joining Ivy were Shayla Williams, Jamillah Bonner, and Tysia Manual as each finished with ten apiece. Manuel grabbed seven rounds to lead Butler while she and Ivy tied for the team lead with five steals. Carly Bettancourt led all players with seven assists while also scoring nine points on seven-of-eight shooting from the free throw line.
