Barton winning streak ends at No 20 Hutchinson

The Barton Community College women's basketball team had its 3-game conference winning streak snapped Thursday night in a game moved back one day due to the icy weather conditions Wednesday. Barton was beaten by Hutchinson 81-58 at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson. The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3 in the West and 10-9 overall while Hutchinson, ranked No 20 in the latest NJCAA poll, improves to 17-2 overall and 4-1 in the West. Barton is back home Friday to take on Barclay College in a non league contest at 6 pm. The Cougars will also be at home Wednesday to start West action back up against Colby in a 6 pm tip.

Highlights
The Cougars came out of the gates all right, leading 8 minutes into the game by a 12-11 score following a fast-break layup from sophomore Alisha Fanshier. That would be the last time Barton led and also the last time in nearly 8 minutes the Cougars scored. During that stretch Hutch opened things up with a 19-0 run and a 30-12 lead. Barton did finish the half strong with an 11-1 run to trail 36-25 at intermission.

The Blue Dragons then put the game away early in the 2nd half with a 7-0 to lead 43-25. Hutch led by as many as 28 in the half on the way to the 23-point win. Netanya Jackson led the Cougars with 14 points thanks in large part to an 8-of-11 effort from the free throw line. Shea Shoemaker added 11 and Alisha Fanshier 10 in the loss. Jackie Patterson led all scores for Hutchinson with 16 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Barton will step outside conference Friday for a contest that was added late to the schedule after Labette dropped the Cougars after the season had already started due to scheduling too many games. The Cougars bye date for conference action is this weekend so Barton won't step back into West play until the visit from Colby.
