Barton gets on winning track with 89-37 win over Dodge in West play
The Barton Community College women's basketball team earned its 1st Jayhawk West win of the season Saturday night with an 89-37 drubbing of Dodge City at the Barton Gym. The Cougars forced Dodge City into 33 turnovers to collect the win and snap a 3-game losing skid. The win improves Barton to 1-2 in the West and 11-6 overall. Dodge City drops to 0-3 and 4-13. The Cougars will be in search of win No. 2 when they travel to Garden City Wednesday for a 5:30 pm tip against the Broncbusters. Garden is 1-1 in the West and 7-9 overall.

Highlights
Barton never trailed in the contest with the only tie coming at 4-all in the opening 2 minutes of play. From there Barton went on a 16-2 run take a 22-6 lead on the Conquistadors. Dodge City committed 5 turnovers in that stretch as Barton pulled away early in the contest. The Cougars were on cruise control after that building a 37-16 lead at intermission. It was a 1st half that saw the Cougars force 23 Dodge turnovers but only netted 16 points off those turnovers. Much of that due to the fact Barton also struggled handling the ball, committing 12 1st half turnovers of its own.

The 2nd half saw Barton eventually call off the press with Dodge turning the ball over just 10 times. Barton also trimmed its turnovers from 12 to 6. Barton hit an impressive 57 percent from the floor in the 2nd half as the Cougars put 52 points on the board in the final 20 minutes of action.

Courtney Sturdivant led the way for Barton as the sophomore point guard tallied 17 points, handed out 5 assists and nabbed 5 steals in the win. Shelby Hillman added 13 points off the bench as 4 Cougars found double figures. Tressie Todd scored 11 off the bench and Danielle Bird added 10 for Barton. Todd and Jordie James each grabbed 8 rebounds. Dodge was led by Nekea Sims and Robin Parker with 13 each.

Barton will look to even its West record Wednesday when the Cougars play their 3 road game in 4 outings in West play. Barton will travel to Garden City to take on a Broncbuster team that is 1-1 to so far in West play. Barton has lost just once to Garden in the last 4 years but the Cougars have struggled in Garden of the past few years. Barton is just 3-4 at the Perryman Center over the past 7 years with 2 of those wins coming in a struggle.
