Barton women roll to wins at Hoop-N-Surf; now 9-0
The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team was tested for a half in Honolulu, Hawaii this past week but that was about it. Other than that the Cougars had sunny time at the Hoop-N-Surf Classic, winning two games to move to 9-0 on the season. The No. 5 ranked Cougars won 90-65 over Jones County (Miss) Wednesday then captured a 108-27 victory over Marathon County (Wisc) Thanksgiving Day. The Cougars will head to Coffeyville this weekend to take part in the Jayhawk Shoot-Out.

Highlights
For the 3rd straight contest the Cougars were in a battle at the halftime in the opening game in Hawaii, trailing Jones County 40-38. Jones County hit 42 percent in the opening half of play and converted 12-of-16 free throws to grab the lead. But the 2nd half was a different story – nearly from the outset.
Barton still trailed 45-42 just more than 1 minute into the half before turning up the heat. The Cougars used a 14-0 run over 1:43 to take a 56-45 lead. The onslaught continued for Barton as the Cougars put together a 38-6 run to take an 80-51 lead with 8:31 to play. The lead reached 30 before Barton settled for the 90-65 win.
Courtney Sturdivant led the Cougars with 25 points followed by Kristine Silaraja with 19. Jessica Halsig scored 14, Ipek Turkyilmaz 12 and Inga Muciniece 11 in the win. Muciniece also added 18 rebounds while Turkyilmaz handed out 5 assists. Sturdivant had 6 steals for Barton. Kate Hubbard scored 17 and Kim Lewis 14 for Jones County, which fell to 4-1 with the loss.
The Cougars buried Marathon County from the outset Thanksgiving Day, leading 11-0 in the 1st 4 minutes. That lead went to 25-3 and 42-5 before the Cougars took a 57-17 lead to halftime on the way to the 108-27 win.
Brooke Conley led the Cougars with 21 points off the bench as all 11 Barton players saw at least 13 minutes of action. Muciniece added 16 and Turkyilmaz 15 for the Cougars as 7 different players reached double figures in the win. Muciniece had another double-double with 10 rebounds.
Muciniece and Sturdivant were both named to the All-Classic Team. Johnson County was also at the Classic, defeating Marathon County 97-51 Wednesday and Jones County 82-81 Thursday.
Barton will face KCK and Allen County this weekend at the Shoot-Out. The Cougars will play KCK Friday at 1 pm and finish with Allen Saturday at 9 pm.
