Cougars impressive to tip off women’s basketball season
The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team jumped off to an impressive start to the season, rolling to wins over Moberly (Mo) and Lincoln Land (Ill) in the Military Appreciation Classic this past weekend at the Barton Gym. The Cougars beat Moberly Friday night by a 75-38 margin and came back with an 87-51 win over Lincoln Land Saturday. The Cougars will be back at home this weekend when they host Eastern Oklahoma and Coffeyville in two more big tilts at the Barton Classic.

Highlights
The Cougars used a suffocating defense in the opening half Friday, limiting Moberly to just 16 points on 5-of-21 shooting from the field. That allowed the Cougars to build a 40-16 lead by intermission and the team never looked back. Moberly didn't fair much better in the 2nd half, hitting just 8-of29 from the field as the Greyhounds shot just 26 percent during the game. Barton hit 44 percent in the win and led by as many as 41 points.
Freshman point guard Courtney Sturdivant led Barton with 18 points, hitting 8-fo14 shots. Redshirt freshman Kristine Silaraja and freshman Lynsey Maple each added 10 in the win. Sophomore All-American Candidate Inga Muciniece collected 13 rebounds and handed out 5 assists for the Cougars.
Barton trailed nearly all the opening 10 minutes Saturday, falling behind 7-0 in the 1st 5 minutes. But the Cougars caught the Loggers at the 10:51 mark and overtook them for good with 9:44 left in the half. By halftime Barton had built a 45-28 lead and was well on its way to the easy win.
Four Cougars were in double figures for Barton led by Sturdivant and Andrea Bogart with 17 each. Brooke Conley added 15 for the Cougars and Ipek Turkyilmaz finished with 14, hitting 4 3-pointers. Muciniece grabbed 9 rebounds to pace Barton while Sturdivant handed out 7 assists.
