Cougars fall to No. 3 Saints in West opener
The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team started off what is an extremely tough Jayhawk West slate of games Saturday by hosting the No. 3 team in the nation as Seward County paid a visit to the Cougars. Seward pulled away from Barton in the 2nd half as the Cougars dropped their conference opener by a 70-44 score. The loss dropped Barton to 10-5 overall and 0-1 in the West. Seward is now 14-1 at 1-0.

Highlights
Barton battled with the No. 3 Saints for much of the opening half trailing just 24-18 with 3 minutes to play in the opening half. But a quick 6-0 run by Seward to end the half gave the Saints a 30-18 lead at intermission. The Cougars wouldn't go away, however, and trailed just 41-31 with just under 13 minutes to play. A 10-0 Seward run over the next 3 minutes gave the Saints a 51-31 lead and Barton was only able to get the score under 20 twice the rest of the way.
The Cougars were paced by freshmen Saara Pelttari and Carly Bloomfield with 9 and 8 points each. Akia Harmon grabbed 7 rebounds and Natalie Arndt dished out 4 assists for Barton. Seward's Amanda Foster led all scorers with 18 points.
