Cougars move to 5-1 with sweep of Jayhawk East teams
The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team ran its record to 5-1 this season with two wins over Jayhawk East foes at the Pizza Hut Classic held at the Barton County Gym. The Cougars defeated Highland 79-52 Friday night then knocked off Neosho by a 54-46 count Saturday. Barton was the only team women’s team to finish the Classic with a perfect 2-0 mark. Barton will get another challenge from the East Wednesday when Cowley County pays a visit.

Highlights
The Cougars took an early lead Highland and never gave it up the rest of the way to start off the Pizza Hut Classic. Barton led 34-22 at halftime then shot 52 percent from the floor in the 2nd half as they built the big lead on the Scotties. Freshman Saara Pelttari led the Cougars in scoring with 15 points followed by Akia Harmon who tossed in 14. Harmon also grabbed 11 boards for her 2nd double-double of the young season. Natalie Arndt handed out 6 assists to go with her 8 points.
Barton had a battle Saturday night with the Panthers of Neosho before pulling out the 54-46 win. The Cougars led by a pair at the half then held the Panthers to just 18 2nd half points to secure the victory. Both team struggled to get off shots in the 2nd half thanks to the defensive pressure. Barton shot just 22 times, hitting 9 for 43 percent. Neosho got off just 23 shots and hit only 6. Freshman Carly Bloomfield led the Cougars with 13 points, followed by Harmon with 12. Sophomore Briana Harris just missed a triple-double, leading Barton with 10 assists, tossing in 9 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Harris also had 3 steals.
