Barton Softball splits doubleheader hosting Hesston College #GoBarton

Knocking off the nation's 13th ranked team the last time on the field, Monday at Cougar Field the Barton Community College softball team found itself in a dogfight, coming out with a doubleheader split against Division II region foe Hesston College.

The Cougars trailed 4-0 after the Larks' first at-bat before retaking the lead in the third to go on to the 9-6 game one victory. In game two, Barton's 1-0 lead was buried as Hesston scored five in each of the second and third frames to hold on for the 13-9 doubleheader split.

The day's results leaves Barton at 13-12 on the year with Hesston moving to 6-7.

Barton returns to conference play on Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Dodge City Community College before returning to Cougar Field in Saturday's 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Jaysa Anderson extended her hit streak to 18 straight games going 3-3 in the opener including her 6th home run of the year in following with a second inning double of the nightcap extending the streak.

Leadoff hitter Halie Stoneking led the Cougars' 25 hits on the afternoon going 5-of-9, three hits in the opener including her team leading 7th dinger of the year followed by a 2-of-5 performance in the second game to extend her hit streak to 14 straight.

The Cougars cleared the fence four times in their 12 game one hits, Anderson and Stoneking being joined by Sydni Williams 5th and Calli McConnell's 6th.

Barton collected 13 hits in game two, three blowing past the blue clad fence lining Cougar Field. Mikaila Herring belted two of them, a one-out solo shot in the fourth before leading off the sixth with her 3rd of the season.

Along with Stoneking's five hits in the twinbill, Kayden Smith collected four hits as did Anderson and McConnell.

Making her first circle appearance of the season in game one, Julia Carey gave up one hit in her one inning of work, returning to the circle in game two relief on one-hit, one-inning of work. The insertion into the lineup brought Carey to the plate for just her 14th at-bat in her two year career, taking a first pitch ball to send the second pitch on a lined shot over the fence for her first collegiate round-tripper.

Jessica Morgan struck out a season high 11 against just one walk, scattering five hit in six innings of relief improving to 5-2 on the year.

Jenna Henderson struck out five for the fifth time of the year, taking game two's loss in 3.1 innings of work dropping to 2-7 on the year.
