Cougars lose pair to No. 11 Saints; face Colby to open Region VI play
The Barton Community College softball team lost its final two regular season games to Seward County Friday afternoon, falling to the No. 11 ranked Saints 6-3 and 12-2 at Cougar Fields. Barton, which earlier in the week picked up a forfeit win from Luna College (NM), is now 10-29 on the season and finished Jayhawk West play 2-14. Seward won the West and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament. The Saints are 44-12 overall and were 13-3 in the West. Barton will be the No. 5, taking on No. 4 Colby to start the tournament at Wichita State University's Wilkins Stadium Friday at 10 am.
Highlights
Coming off a split with West runner-up Butler, Barton had a chance for the same Friday against Seward but a 3-run 6th by the Saints gave them a 6-2 lead in the opener. Barton had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening inning before falling behind 3-1. Barton made it 3-2 in the bottom of the 4th but the 3-run 6th proved too much to overcome for the Cougars. Barton did add another run in the final inning but could never get the tying run to the plate. The Cougars had 9 hits in the loss with Asia Newberry leading the way with 2.
Barton again took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning but fell behind 6-1 in the 2nd inning and was never in the contest after that. The Cougars scored again later in the game but had just 1 hit during the loss – a Chelsea Bauer single in the 2nd inning.
The Cougars turn their focus to the Region VI playoffs and the 5-team double elimination tournament. Barton will open against Colby with Seward awaiting the winner of that contest at 2 pm. The loser will play the loser of the Butler-Garden game at 4 pm Friday. The tournament will conclude Saturday. All games are on the campus of Wichita State University at Wilkins Field.
