Barton softball team finding stride; wins 2 of 3 in Colby tourney
The Barton County Community College softball team won 2 of 3 games this past weekend at the Colby Tournament before rain washed out the 2nd day of action. Rain also took care of a scheduled Jayhawk West doubleheader set for Tuesday at Colby. During the tournament, Barton put up 33 runs, but lost the opening game. After that contest, Barton scored in double digit both games as they improved to 18-35 and have now won 4 of its last 7 games. The Cougars will make up that twinbill at Colby – weather permitting – Friday in a 1 pm start.

Highlights
Barton and Trinidad (Colo) hooked up in an offensive slugfest in the opener that saw Trinidad prevail by a 13-8 score.. Barton put 3 runs on the board in the opening inning, keyed by a Ruby Renya double that scored Myra Ramos and Brittney Allen. After a single Trinidad run in the bottom of the 1st, Barton pushed its lead to 7-1 with 4 more runs in the 2nd inning. Deanna Young, Ramos and Whitney Boeh all drove in runs for the Cougars in the inning with 2 outs as it looked as if Barton was on its way to a win. That changed quickly, however, as Trinidad posted a 4-spot of its own in the bottom of the 2nd and the rally began. Trinidad took an 8-7 lead in the 4th then pushed it to 9-7 in the 5th. The big blow for the Cougars came in the 6th when Trinidad posted 4 more runs for a 13-7 lead. Young, Allen, Ramos, Boeh, and Reyna all had hits in the contest with Ramos, Boeh, and Reyna driving in 2.

Barton bounded back for a 13-5 win over Northwest Nebraska in the 2nd game of the day for the Cougars. Barton trailed 3-1 going into the bottom part of the 3rd inning but exploded for 9 runs in the frame. Reyna and Roxanne Longoria each connected on 3-run homers in the inning as the Cougars cruised to the win. Megan Wedel had 3 hits in the win along with 2 RBI in addition to the 3-run blasts by Reyna Longoria.

The Cougars ended the tournament with another double-digit contest rallying to beat North Platte (Neb) by a 12-8 score. Barton fell behind 8-3 in the game after 3 innings but scored 9 times in the final 2 innings for the win. Meanwhile, Cougar pitcher Keri Cervera settled down after a tough 1st 3 innings (along with some defensive woes) to shut out North Platte the final 3 innings. Young started the 5th with a solo homer for Barton on its way to a 6-run inning and the lead. Lanna Wondra doubled in a pair of runs in the frame and Barton took a 9-8 lead when Melissa Boller singled in Wondra. The Cougars padded that lead with 3 more in the 6th before the time-limit ended the contest after 6 innings of play. A leadoff homer again started the inning, this time from Allen as Barton increased its lead to 12-8.
