Cougars knock off No. 11 ranked Seward in 2nd game of doubleheader
The Barton County Community College softball team nearly pulled out a win in the opener of the Jayhawk West twinbill at No. 11 ranked Seward County Thursday afternoon then did turn the trick in the 2nd contest. Barton led 5-3 late in the 1st game before Seward rallied for its 22nd straight win on the season by a 10-5 score. Barton, however, did not let that happen in the 2nd game as the Cougars held off an attempted Seward rally for a 5-1 win. The win moves Barton to 8-6 in the West and 16-34 overall. Seward lost for the 1st time in West action, falling to 13-1 and 44-6 overall.

Highlights
Barton matched Seward run-for-run early in the opener, as each team scored once in the 1st and 2 times in the 3rd. Barton took a 5-3 lead on Seward in the 5th when Brittney Allen's sacrifice fly scored Roxanne Longoria and Myra Ramos singled in Brooke Pearce. But this time Seward responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning and added 2 more in the 6th for the 10-5 lead and the Saints 22nd straight win. Pearce was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Cougars in the loss, scoring twice. Allen and Ramos each drove in 2 runs.

After a perfect day at the plate in the opener, Pearce took to the mound in the 2nd game and shutdown the high-powered Saints. She did not allow an earned run the entire game – giving up just a single run in the final inning of play for the win. Pearce allowed just 4 hits in picking up the win.

Barton took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning when Leslie Lopez doubled in 2 runs in a pinch hitting appearance, scoring Ruby Reyna and Myra Ramos. Barton made it 3-0 in the 6th as Allen started the inning with a double and Ramos singled her in. The Cougars gave themselves and Pearce a little more cushion in the 7th, scoring 2 more times for a 5-0 lead. Melissa Boller and Pearce started the inning with singles and later scored. Boller scored on an Allen sac fly then Whitney Boeh singled in Pearce. Seward did post 1 run in the bottom of the 7th but never really threatened in the frame.

Reyna ended the game 3 hits while Lopez had the big 2-run double to start the scoring and lead the Cougars in RBI in the contest. Allen also had 2 hits as the Cougars pounded out 11 hits in the win.
