Barton earns home split with Colby

Barton earns home split with Colby
The Barton County Community College softball team split two close games in Great Bend against their Jayhawk West foe, the Colby Trojans. The Cougars lost a defensive battle in the first game by a final score of 1-0 in 10 innings. Barton found themselves on the better end of a one run lead at the end of the second game, earning a 4-3 victory. The split brings Barton's record to 11-32 on the season, 3-11 in conference play as they head into their last home game of the regular season on Thursday against Seward County.

Highlights
In game one, pitching was the name of the game. Rosamar Gonzalez would go all 10 innings for the Cougars, scattering 7 hits with 4 walks, 1 run, and 11 strikeouts. The only run of the game went to Colby on an RBI single in the top of the 10th. Despite Gonzalez's masterful work on the mound, Barton could get no offense. The Cougars' bats would only muster 3 hits for the first game, 2 by Natosha Stewart and one for Gonzalez herself. Barton had a chance to tie the game in the home half of the 10th with Lanna Wondra on third with just one out. But Megan Zumbrunn struck out and Gonzalez would ground out to short to end the contest with a 1-0 loss.

Game two was another close game, this time Barton would not let another one get by. Pitching was still solid for the Cougars. Ginger Wood got the start and went for 6 and a third innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts for the win. Gonzalez would come on the pitch the final two-thirds of the 7th inning, giving up just one hit for the save. Scoring started quick for Barton, putting one run on the board in their half of the first inning. Jenna Wondra led off with a single and groundouts by Leni Wagers and Natosha Stewart advanced her to third. Heather Watson was next up with a single to knock home the first run of the ballgame with a single. Colby took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd, but an RBI single from Stewart scoring Wagers in the bottom half tied the game back at 2-all. Colby added another run in the top of the 4th to lead 3-2 until the Barton half of the 5th inning. Back to back singles by Jenna Wondra and Wagers, along with a fielding error by Colby tied the game up at 3. Stewart then doubled home Wagers to take a 4-3 lead. The pitching and defense would hold on from there, giving Barton a split of the day's series.
