Barton sweeps foes at Colby Tournament

Barton sweeps foes at Colby Tournament
The Barton County Community College softball team had its best weekend of the season as far as wins are concerned, sweeping the Colby Tournament with a 4-0 mark. Barton received a forfeit win from McCook and won all 3 games on the field. Barton defeated Jayhawk West rival Dodge City, Jayhawk East foe Independence and Iowa Western to complete the perfect weekend. Barton is now 13-19 overall this season.

Highlights
Saturday the Cougars knocked off Dodge City 8-3 and Independence 6-4. The Cougars were also to play McCook (Neb) Saturday but received a forfeit win in that contest. Barton defeated Iowa Western Sunday by a 4-3 score.

Barton's win over Dodge City was keyed by a 5-run 3rd inning. The Cougars trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 3rd. The Cougars tied the game with one out when Natosha Stewart drove in Jessica DeWild with a single. Stewart later scored 1 of 3 unearned runs in the inning and Amanda Baker added a RBI single scoring Heather Watson for the 5-1 lead. After Dodge cut the lead to 5-2, Barton pushed the lead to 8-2 with 3 more runs in the 4th inning as Megan Zumbrunn drove in Watson and Kelly Delgado with a single. Rosamar Gonzalez picked up the win for the Cougars, allowing just one earned run.

In its win over Indy Barton did not have one big inning spark them as they did in the win over Dodge. Instead the Cougars scored in four innings, never more than 2 in an inning. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st, Barton evened the score at 1-all in the bottom of the inning when Delgado drove in Stewart. Barton took a 3-1 lead in the 2nd when the Cougars scored two unearned runs after the 1st 2 batters were retired. The Cougars would not trail again. Vanessa Roy and Jenna Wondra drove in runs in the 5th inning as the Cougars pushed the lead to 6-3 on their way to the win. Stewart and Wondra each had two hits in the game and Roy scored twice. Krista Casey picked up the win for the Cougars and Gonzalez the save.

Barton finished the tournament off with a 4-3 win over Iowa Western. The Cougars banged out 9 hits in the game but didn't lead until the final inning. In fact, Barton fell behind 3-0 as it left 5 runners stranded through the 1st 4 innings. The Cougars finally broke into the scoring column in the 5th and did so in a big way. Barton scored 3 times in the 5th to even the score at 3-all. Delgado doubled in Stewart and Wondra to make it 3-2 and later scored herself to even the game. Barton won the contest in the bottom of the 7th and final inning when Baker drove in Delgado with a bases-loaded, 2-out, game-ending single. Casey picked up the win, going 5 innings in relief.
