Barton hands Seward 1st region loss in twinbill split
The Barton County Community College softball team discovered its offense Saturday at Cougar Fields in a split with Region VI front runner Seward County. Barton won the opener 8-2 then lost 15-6 in the nightcap. The loss was the 1st in region play for Seward, which leads the Region with a 7-1 record. Barton is now 4-4 in Region VI play and 21-25 overall. The 14 runs scored in the doubleheader is the most in a twinbill this season for the Cougars.
Highlights
The Cougars' Rosamar Gonzalez allowed Seward a pair of runs in the 1st inning then shut down the Saints offense on just 2 hits the rest of the way. Barton made it 2-1 in the 2nd when Heather Watson scored on an Amanda Baker grounder. The Cougars broke through in the 5th with 3 runs and the lead when Kelly Delgado hit a 3-run homer that scored Yanir Mendoza and Natosha Stewart. Barton added 4 more in the 6th to hands the Saints the loss.
Barton looked to be in good shape for the sweep in game two, taking a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Delgado again drove in 3 in the inning to give her 6 RBI during the day. But that lead was short-lived as Seward put together an 8-run 3rd to take the lead for good.
