Ramirez named All-Conference; Curtis tabbed as Coach of the Year
Its hard to tell by looking at the Jayhawk West All-Conference softball team that Barton County Community College finished in a tie for 1st place in the conference. After all, the Cougars placed just 1 player on the 1st team, 2nd team, and honorable mention combined. This despite finishing the West with a 12-4, tied with Pratt for the top spot and 2 games ahead of 3rd place. That one person named is fewer than both Garden City (3) and Cloud County (2), the two clubs that tied for last in the West. Butler County, which finished in a tie 6th, had 3 girls named to the 1st team and 8 selected overall. Barton County had the fewest members honored of any team in the West.
Perhaps that is the reason Barton coach Tom Curtis was tabbed as the Coach of the Year in the West. He joins sophomore standout Karina Ramirez as the only Barton County members mention on the 2004 All Jayhawk West softball team. The Cougars did add Ashlee Earley and Taylor Gorjiyan with Ramirez to the All District C team.
Ramirez was an easy pick as the sophomore went 12-7 one the mound this year and posted with a 1.45 ERA. She allowed just 11 extra base hits in 130 innings of work and held opponents to a .194 batting average against her. Ramirez also had good numbers at the plate, hitting .354 with 35 RBI but she was not picked as an outfielder, where she often played when not pitching.
Earley hit .244 for the Cougars this season while starting at third base. She also fielded .929 from her infield spot. Gorjiyan batted .271 for the Cougars this season.
Curtis guided his team to the 2nd place effort in the West and District C this year. In his final win of the season he earned win No. 600 in his career at Barton County.
