Barton goes 2-3 in first District C Crossover
The Barton County Community College softball team went 2-3 over the weekend at the first of two crossover events against Jayhawk East teams in the District C tournament later this year. Teams are seeded for the District C Championships based on the results of the two crossover tournaments as well games against West teams in the District in regular season play.

Barton went 2-1 on Saturday in Wichita, losing to Johnson County (5-4) then defeating Fort Scott (5-0) and Allen County (4-1). Barton lost both games Sunday, falling to KCK (6-1) and Highland (1-0).

The Cougars are now 15-20 overall and 3-4 in District C. Barton is 2-2 in the Jayhawk West.

Highlights
The Cougars played good softball Saturday, narrowly losing to District C leader Johnson County by a 5-4 score. The Cougars fell behind 5-0 after the top of the 2nd inning, but began to rally from that point. The Cougars score a single run in the bottom of the 2nd when Maggie McCoy scored on a Jamie Reel fly out. The Cougars made things real interesting in the bottom of the 6th with three more runs. Megan Suiter singled in McCoy and Brandi Gillette followed with a 2-run single scoring Reel and Suiter. But the Cougars left two runners stranded in the inning and another in the final inning.

The Cougars pounced back for a 5-0 blanking of Fort Scott as Karalea Closson tossed a 5-hit shutout at the Greyhounds. After stranding 11 runners in the Johnson County, the Cougars were much tidier on the bases, leaving just two runners the entire game. The Cougars scored all 5 runs in the opening frame. Karina Ramirez scored an unearned to start the inning. Later in the frame McCoy singled in Gillette and Erin Morin. On the play the Greyhounds committed an error that allowed Martysha Mosley to score from 1st. Taylor Gorjiyan gave Barton a 5-0 when she singled in McCoy.

Barton made it two in a row to end Saturday's slate of games with a 4-2 win over Allen County. Morin ran into trouble in just one inning on the mound, giving up just 3 hits the entire game to earn the win. The Cougars scored twice in the 3rd for a 2-run lead, keyed by an RBI by Suiter scoring Reel. Morin helped her own cause in the 5th, driving in Suiter after the Red Devils had tied the score at 2-all in the top of the 5th. Barton pushed the margin to 4-2 in the 6th on a Suiter RBI single scoring Gorjiyan.

Sunday did not go as well for as Saturday. Barton dropped its opener to KCK, the current 2nd place team in the district. The Cougars could only manage a single run in the loss to the Blue Devils. The Cougars managed only 5 hits and trailed 6-0 before Suiter doubled in Ramirez in the 6th inning for the only run.

The final game was even less of an offensive show. Barton managed just 3 hits in the game and had only run runner reach 3rd base in the 1-0 shutout loss. Morin allowed just 4 hits herself, but took the pitching loss for the Cougars.
