Cougars sweep Brown Mackie in Salina

Cougars sweep Brown Mackie in Salina
The Barton County Community College softball team recorded its first sweep of the young season, traveling to Salina and defeating Region VI foe Brown Mackie twice. The Cougars squeaked by the Lions in the opener, 7-6, then rolled to a 9-0 win in the second contest in just 5 innings.

The wins push Barton's record to 5-11 overall this season, winning 4 of its last 6 outings.

Highlights
The Cougars looked to be in trouble late in the saw-saw opener with Lions. Barton took a 2-0 with two unearned runs in the 2nd then inning. After falling behind 4-2 the Cougars rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the 4th when Karina Ramirez drove in Jamie Reel on an RBI single. The lead was short-lived, though, as Brown Mackie scored two more times in the bottom of the 4th for a 6-5 lead.

But the Cougars would not be denied. Maggie McCoy started a 2-out, nobody on rally in the top of the 7th and final inning with a single. Pinch runner Ashley Muck then stole second and tied the game when pinch hitter Martysha Mosley doubled her in. Mosley then scored on an error for the 7-6 lead. Karalea Closson pitched a perfect bottom of the 7th, ending the game with a strike out for the come-from-behind win.

Things were somewhat easier in the nightcap for the Cougars. Barton took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd when Karina Ramirez hit a 2-run homer, scoring Megan Suiter. Mosley singled in Brandi Gillette in the 4th to push the Cougar lead to 3-0. The Cougars broke the game open in the 5th inning. Gillette, who has a team-leading 11 RBI, hit a bases loaded single with one out, scoring Ramirez and Brenda Myers. Ruby Garza followed with a 3-run homer scoring Gillette and Angela Tarasoff and give the Cougars an 8-0. Barton added an insurance run in their quest for a run-rule when Mosley scored on a passed ball.

Karalea Closson and Ramirez combined to throw a 2-hit shutout for the Cougars with Closson picking up the win.
