Cougars earn another split in West softball
The Barton County Community College softball team split a pair of games with Garden City Thursday in the team's home opener of 2003. Barton County lost the first game 4-3, but rallied for a 4-3 win in the second contest.



The Cougars are now 7-13 overall and 2-2 in the West.

Highlights
Barton trailed most of the opener by a 1-0 score after the Broncbusters put a run across the plate in the 1st inning. The Cougars overtook Garden City in the bottom of the 6th with a pair of runs for a 2-1 lead. Martysha Mosley drove in Brandi Gillette with a single to tie the game. She gave Barton the lead with when she scored on an Erin Morin single.

But the lead would be short-lived as Garden City answered with 3 runs in the top of the 7th. Angela Tarasoff made it 4-3 when she drove in Megan Suiter but the Cougars stranded her at 2nd base.

Barton again fell behind in the 2nd game, this time 2-0 as the Broncbusters scored twice in the top of the 2nd. The Cougars took the lead in the 4th as Mosley again played a key role for Barton County. The freshman outfielder tripled in Gillette, who had reached on an error to start the Cougar scoring. Mosley scored on another single by Morin by to even the score at 2-all. Barton took a 3-2 lead when Maggie McCoy singled in Morin.

But Garden City once again battled back to tie the game at 3-all in the 5th. The Cougars would get the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th when Suiter tripled and McCoy drove her in. This time there would be no 7th inning rally for the Broncbusters -- at least one that scored runs. Garden City left runners on 2nd and 3rd when the game ended.

Morin got the win for Barton, allowing just 6 hits in the contest. McCoy led Barton offensively with the 2 hits and the 2 RBI.
