Cougars split district games with Brown Mackie
The Barton County Community College softball team picked an unfortunate time to lose their first game of the year to Brown Mackie. The Cougars were 3-0 against the Lions heading into Wednesday doubleheader, which counted toward the District C standings and post season play. The result was a split with the Lions as Brown Mackie won the opener 8-7 in 8 innings before Barton won the nightcap by an 11-5 score.

The post season winner of District C advances to the NJCAA National Tournament. Brown Mackie is 1-1 District C and 4-24 overall.

Highlights
In a game full of Barton miscues in the opener, the Cougars rallied in the 6th inning to take the lead, but lost the game in the 8th. Two errors in the 4th inning led to 4 Brown Mackie runs as the Lions took a 4-0 lead. Barton cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the 4th and one more in the 5th, but left the bases loaded in the 5th.

The Lions pushed the lead to 6-3 before Barton took its first lead of the game in the 6th. Barton collected six hits in the inning as Brandi Gillette drove in 2 runs with a single and Maggie McCoy and Taylor Gorjiyan each drove in 1 run. But the Cougars again left runners on the base paths. After Brown Mackie tied the game at 7-all with more Barton miscues in the 7th, the Cougars appeared to be in position to earn a win in the bottom of the 7th. Megan Suiter singled and Gillette doubled to give Barton runners and 2nd and 3rd with no outs. But they stayed there as Barton stranded 11 runners in the game. Another unearned run by the Lions gave them the win in the 8th.

In the second game, Barton fell behind again by a 3-0 count in the first two innings Karina Ramirez rallied the Cougars. A 2-run double scoring Gorjiyan and Ashley Muck in the 3rd and a 3-run homer in the 5th by Ramirez propelled Barton to a 9-5 lead. Gillette went 4-for-4 in the game as Barton banged out 15 hits. Freshman Erin Morin picked up the win on the mound.
