David Schenek is in his 12th season leading the storied Barton Men’s and Women’s Track & Field programs.

In Coach Schenek’s previous eleven seasons, the Cougars have captured the national title three times, have a combined 26 Top-5 team national finishes, and has landed in the Top-10 nationally 33 times.

Despite a Covid-19 shortened 2019-20 season, Schenek’s Cougars produced another successful season as the men returned home with their third straight national runner-up finish with the women securing a fourth place showing at the indoor NJCAA Championships.

At the 2020 Indoor National Championships, Schenek’s Cougars put a combined 32 scoring performances on the board, 32 personal best efforts, broke 3 school records, and had 9 adjustments to the historic Barton record book. The performances followed another successful KJCCC/Region VI Championship meet ed by the Female Field Athlete of the Meet freshman Ana da Silva the Cougar women captured their second straight and 28th overall Region VI title while the men placed runner-up.

The Cougars produced 38 indoor USTFCCCA All-America awards highlighted by a trio of prestigious honors. First year assistant Trent Egerton garnered National Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year, with freshman jumpers Annia Ashley and Shakwon Coke earning the National Field Athletes of the Year.

Ashley’s two championships were half of the women’s four individual titles, while Coke’s pair were of the five event winners by the Cougar men. Joining the freshman duo was the Central Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, Fiona Richards as the sophomore shattered the school record in the shot put.

A national runner-up finish was the lowest either the men or women finished in either of the 2019 indoor and outdoor NJCAA Championships. The women’s squad secured the College’s 57 National Championship at the indoor championships with the men placing runner-up. In the outdoor season the Cougars were in the title chase in both genders but came up just short in bringing home a pair of runner-up trophies.

The indoor season produced 39 All-American awards including Coach Schenek named both the Central Region Women's Coach of the Year following the women's 28th Region VI Indoor title and earning the National Women’s Coach of the Year. Assisted by the Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year Mark’Quis Frazier, Schenek squad as hauled in the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year by freshman T’Nia Riley.

The squad’s outdoor title chase also resulted in a haul of awards with 41 All-America merits and Coach Schenek and Frazier earning Central Region Coaches of the Year. Schenek’s Cougars assaulted the program record book at the national meet highlighted by Alencar Pereira shattering the NJCAA hammer throw record and Kevin Nedrick winning the National Field Athlete of the Year voting in piling up twenty-six overall points which included the discus title.
