Ten individual titles power Barton men to 23rd Region VI Outdoor Championship; Trio of Cougars earn distinction #GoBarton

Barton men's track and field team following 2021 Region VI Outdoor Championships

The Barton Community College men's track and field team won ten events this weekend to capture the KJCCC/Region VI Outdoor Championships hosted by Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas.

The 23rd outdoor region title for the Barton men also became the program's 54th overall outdoor region championship, putting together 26 scoring performances compiling 178 points to win by 35.5 points. Cloud County Community College placed second at 142.50 with Coffeyville Community College in third with 104 points.

The Cougars also set seven facility records in their two days of competition, posted eleven personal best efforts, and brought home three individual awards.

Barton men's track and field Assistant Coach Trent Edgerton receives the 2021 Region VI Men's Assistant Coach of the Meet Award from KJCCC Commissioner Carl Heinrich Second year assistant coach Trent Edgerton was voted the Men's Assistant Coach of the Meet by his peers with jump specialist Shakwon Coke named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet while Denzel Feagin's 22 points earned the Men's High Point Athlete of the Meet.

In the KJCCC West scoring, Barton and Cloud County tied for the title with each compiling 214 points with Hutchinson a distant third place with 83 points.

Barton will conclude the season next week in a three-day trip to Levelland, Texas, for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships held May 11-13 hosted by South Plains College.

Barton men's track and field athlete Shakwon Coke receives the 2021 Region VI Male Field Athlete of the Meet Award from KJCCC Commissioner Carl Heinrich Coke has been the nation's leader throughout the season and this past weekend continued his dominance in front of region foes. On Friday, Coke didn't soar to his long jump facility record of 8.16m set earlier in the season at the Cowley Invite, but did better the completion by over two feet with a winning 8.05m (26-05.00) leap. Glenith Calvin III took seventh at 6.76m (22-02.25).

On Saturday it took one attempt to win the triple jump by over five feet, exploding down the runway to launch the programs 4th farthest mark at 16.70m (54-09.50). The distance also shattered the facility best set in 2005 by former Cougar Marcus Lee.

Advancing from Friday's preliminary rounds, Feagin began piling up the points helping the 4x100m Relay tandem of Ali Moore, Jevon O'Bryant and Caleb Boger place 5th in 41.48. Feagin and Boger later represented Barton in the 100m and 200, Feagin taking the short track title by tying his best of 10.20 and Boger taking the 200m in 20.47 while Feagin placed second at 20.62. In Friday's prelims Boger set the new facility record in clocking a personal best 20.43 to break the previous record set in 2017.

Barton men's track and field athlete Denzel Feagin receives the 2021 Male High Point Athlete of the Meet Award from KJCCC Commissioner Carl Heinrich O'Bryant led a 1-2-3 Cougar finish in the 400m, breaking Remuro Henry's 2009 facility record of a 47.05, by timing a 46.66 to edge out Telron Bradford Jr.'s person best of 46.683 and just ahead of Gamali Felix's 46.688.

The trio added Ja'Kwan Hale to the mix for the 4x400m relay capping Barton's region title in style with a 3:08.85 to break the Cougars' 2006 squad's facility record of 3:10.39.

Earlier in the day Hale warmed up the legs competing in the high jump for the first time of the season, rising to a 2.00m (6-06.75) height to take second place. Combining both his speed and spring, the nation's 400m Hurdle leader earned the region title in a 52.08 time to break the facility record of former Cougar Azim Smith's time of 52.19 set in 2005.

Prior to Hale's 400m achievement, Almighty Williamson captured the first of Barton's hurdle crowns with a winning 14.42 time recovering a from a near disaster clipping of the final hurdle of the race.

In the mid-distance, Tyrese Reid broke the 2009 facility record by .07 seconds in winning the 800m title in 1:51.83, coming ninety minutes after placing 6th in the 1500m with a personal best line crossing of 4:05.60)

Barton scored 48 points in four throwing events with Fabio Hessling the lone title winner with a 65.29m (214-02) hammer throw with Tyler Nelson's personal best 49.73m (163-02) mark placing third, and Jeremiah Atkeson's best 46.33m (152-00) placing just outside of the point scoring in ninth. Nelson would also take 3rd in the Javelin at 48.26m (158-04) and 5th in the discus at 44.96m (147-06).

Giovanni Gutierrez' personal best 48.44m (158-11) earned 3rd in the discus, placed 4th in shot at 16.08m (52-09.25), and 8th on a personal best javelin throw of 42.37m (139-00).

Fred Moudani led the shot put contingent with a 3rd place heave of 16.39m (53-09.25) and placed 7th in the discus at 43.13m (141-06).
