Barton’s Coke earns national outdoor track weekly honor #GoBarton

Barton track and field athlete Shakwon Coke earns March 30, 2021, USTFCCCA NJCAA National Athlete of the Week.

Shakwon Coke of the 3rd ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team has been named the NJCAA Division I National Track Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Coke competed in and made the most of his one event last Saturday at the Cowley Tiger Invite, competing in the outdoor long jump for the first time donning a Cougar uniform and making a national impact soaring to the 3rd best ever NJCAA distance at 8.16m (26-09.25). The mark was a personal best by far, surpassing his 7.78m (25-6¼) during the 2020 indoor season.

Tied for second in Barton history with Clayton Latham ('02) and behind a half inch behind Walter Davis' 2000 top spot, Coke is now second on the All-College Descending Order List and sits as the third-best performer in NJCAA history.

This is the third year in a row that a male Barton athlete has been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season joining Alencar Pereira (2019), Christian Lyon (2018) and Enrique Martinez (2018).

Barton and Coke compete in the two-day Jo Meaker Classic and Multis on Friday, April 2, hosted by West Texas A&M University.
