Barton track and field programs runner-up at Region VI Indoor Championships #GoBarton

The Barton Community College track and field programs each placed runner-up this past weekend at the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center.

Barton track and field Assistant Coach Trent Edgerton The Barton women captured six individual championships amongst their eighteen scoring performances while the men won three crowns, scoring in seventeen events. The Cougars also brought home some extra hardware as second year assistant coach Trent Edgerton was named the Men's Assistant Coach of the Meet and Ana da Silva earning the Female Field Athlete of the Meet.

Both teams finished runner-up to Cloud County Community College as the women's 113 total was seventy points shy of the T-birds while the men compiled 120 points in falling fifty-nine points behind in the race. The women accumulated 18 more points than third placers Fort Scott Community College and Butler Community College with the men having a twenty-seven point cushion over third place Cowley College.

Barton returns to Pittsburg on March 5-6 for the indoor season finale in the two-day NJCAA Indoor Championships.

Women Highlights
Barton also added to its national qualifying list as the 4x400m relay team of Shemia Odaine, Jayda Dillon, Dayjsha Fanning, and Lashanna Graham clocked a third place and nation's fourth best time of 3:51.67 in their first race of the season.

Barton women's track and field Ana Da Silva with KJCCC/Region VI Commissioner Carl Heinrich presenting Silva with 2021 Region VI Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet Twenty of Barton's points came from da Silva in winning both of her throwing events by a good margin. In Saturday's weight throw, da Silva uncorked a season best 18.22m (59-09.50) throw, a foot further than her nearest competitor and just two inches from her program second best effort. Also second best on the historical chart in the shot put, Da Silva's 15.36m (50-04.75) mark was the event's top by nearly four feet. Barton earned nine additional points in the two events with Jada Sewell's person best 13.29m (43-07.25) placed sixth in the weight throw while her 12.71m (41-08.50) mark in the shot put placed third overall.

Barton moved up from third place after day one results, powered by five region titles, the first coming from Ayesha Nelson winning the 60m hurdles in 8.82.

Annia Ashley joined da Silva as a double winner, earning 25 points towards the Cougars' total. Ashley soard to both the triple jump (12.33m, 40-05.50) and high jump titles (1.66m, 5-05.25) after placing fourth in Saturday's long jump (5.58m, 18-03.75). Joining Ashley in the triple jump with a fourth place marking (11.14m, 36-06.75), Nia Robinson nearly had the long jump title behind a season best 6.06m (19-10.75) but a final competitor effort pushed her into the runner-up position . Shemia Odaine gave the Cougars three more points in the event with a personal best 5.53m (18-01.75) leap to place sixth. Odaine added five more points to the team total in the 60m dash, recording a 7.73 in finishing fourth.

Kayan Green earned the final running event title for Barton, clocking a 2:16.34 while Sasha Brown's 2:31.14 was good enough for sixth.

Men Highlights
Highlights from the two days of competition included the performance of Tyrese Reid to win the 800m. Just missing a program Top-10 his last time on the track, Reid came through on Sunday with a 1:52.03 time to land in the 8th spot all time to win the event by two seconds.

One of the remaining two Barton first place finishes came in the 400m as the Cougars went 1-2-3 in a hotly contested Heat 8 resulting in the top four finishers within .72 seconds of each other. The competition pushed Gamali Felix to record a personal best 47.95 to win the event over Jevon O'Bryant's 48.12 and Ja'Kwan Hale's 48.21.

The trio joined with Reid in another exciting finish, coming in the final Heat 3 of the meet's concluding 4x400m race, edging out the competition by a .72 second margin as the top three clocked nation leading times of just .81 seconds of difference.

Although the Cougars didn't get a victory in Saturday's weight throw, Barton did pile up nineteen points in the 2-3-4 finish behind the national leader in the event. Fabio Hessling, who already sits fourth on Barton's all-time chart, marked a runner-up 18.16m (59-07.00) with Fred Moudani taking third at 16.26m (53-04.25) and Tyler Nelson's personal best 15.10m (49-06.50) taking the fourth slot.

Barton also had four additional runner-up placings, including in the throws as Fred Moudani finished second at 17.77m (58-03.75) with Giovanni Gutierrez' personal best 16.01m (52-06.50) coming in fourth. Fabio Hessling placed just outside the top eight scoring (14.12m, 46-04.00)

Jumper Shakwon Coke earned fourteen points toward the Cougars total, placing third in Saturday's long jump at 7.19m (23-07.25) before placing behind the nation's triple jump leader in marking a 15.16m (49-09.00).

On the track a pair of bests led the Barton 200m entries as Caleb Boger and Denzel Feagin went 2-3 in each resetting their top performance in both the preliminary and final rounds. Boger clocked a season best 21.56 in prelims to better it in the finals at 21.38) while Feagin timed a season best 21.70 in prelims to then post a personal best 21.41 in the finals.

Almighty Williamson earned the other runner-up placing by clocking a 8.24 in the 60m hurdles.
