Nelson's two golds and national placings earns KJCCC Field Athlete of the Week honor

Ricky Nelson of the fifth ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team has been awarded week one's KJCCC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week following his performance last week in Arkansas City at the Cowley College Tiger Invite.

Nelson highlighted Barton's twenty-five top ten placings capturing both the discus and shot put competitions.  In the discus, the Illinois sophomore led a Barton 1-2-3 placing with a 53.06m (177-04) throw, just .38m shy of his school third best throw and second best in the nation this year.   Sanjae Lawrence took second at 47.14 (154-08) while Stevon Crooks threw a personal best 46.17m (151-06) in finishing third.  With Crooks' throw, the Cougars now have all three within the nation's top thirteen with Nelson in second, Lawrence in tenth, and Crooks in the thirteenth spot.

Exceeding the 16m mark twice in the shot put with three of this six throws good enough to win, Nelson's second attempt was the recorded winning mark landing at a personal best 16.22m (53-02.75) and seventh best distance in the nation.

Nelson and the Cougars next action will come this weekend in Canyon, Texas, competing in the West Texas A&M Classic and Multis held Friday and Saturday.
