Thirty-four top ten finishes powers Cougar track and field team to runner-up Region VI finish

The Barton Community College men's track and field team captured five titles this past weekend finishing runner-up at the Region VI Outdoor Championships held at Garden City Community College's Broncbuster Stadium.  Competing in all but four of the twenty-two events while losing out points in two of the three relays, the Cougars acquired thirty-five top ten finishes in sixteen events during the cold and blustery weekend compiling 149 points coming up shy of champion Butler Community College's 181.

Five different athletes won a championship with the Cougars sweeping both the hurdle events.  Jermaine Jones' 14.39 led three Cougars in the top ten taking the top spot while Louis Rivers finished seventh just .02 of second ahead of Kevin Turner's ninth place 14.98 time.   Kadeem Williams led another three Barton entry event winning 400m Hurdles in 53.50 while Jones grabbed the seventh spot at 56.86 and Rivers' 57.75 placing tenth.

Devyn Brotherton led the distance entries beginning his Saturday with a national qualifying 9:56.43 to beat the field by twenty-five seconds before wrapping up his day with a 16:12.78 time to finish fourth in the 5000m.

The Cougars earned two more titles in the field events with the first coming in the triple jump as Barton took the top two spots as Adama Mbye's 15.23m edged out teammate Leon Boyd's 15.18m.  Alfredo Smith gave the Cougars three in the top ten grabbing the tenth spot with a 12.76m.

Occurring simultaneously with Mbye's championship being held at Garden City High School, back at Broncbuster Stadium the Cougars put another three in the top ten of the discus throw.  Ricky Nelson easily won the event with a 54.10m with Romario Antoine's 46.90m taking third with Stevon Crooks earning a point in eighth place with a 43.50m mark.

Next up for the Cougars will be a trip to Levelland, Texas, for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships held May 17-19.
