Jayhawk Classic fares well for the Cougars, add four more national qualifiers

Four members of the Barton Community College men's track and field team met national qualifying marks at this past weekend's Holiday Inn Invitational held on the campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The 60 meter dash fared well for the Cougars as three sprinters met NJCAA Indoor qualifying standards.  A week after qualifying in the 200 meters, David Winters also qualified in the 60 meters finishing in 4th place in a time of 6.80.  The freshman duo of Mike Simmons and Will Brown also qualified in the event placing 16th with identical 7.01 times.  In the 200 meters, sophomore Christian Black finished in 33rd in a time of 23.81 while freshman Shadrack Adu-Gyamfi was just .73 seconds shy from qualifying in the 400 meters by finishing in 50.73 seconds for 6th place.

Freshman Sampson Azumah Laari bettered his 800 meter national qualifying time last week in Nebraska by capturing first place in a time of 1:55.88.  Brady Holler, who competed last week in the 1000 meter, also ran the 800 meter event finishing in 26th place in 2:04.22.  Sophomore Tyler Lumpkin exceeded his personal best in the 1000 meter to also reach qualifying standards by crossing the finish line in 2:39.58 to finish 7th.  Larned freshman Zach Wilson, who ran the 800 meter last week, finished in 12th place in the 1000 meter in a time of 2:49.37.   Rebounding from a disappointment last week, Raymond Robinson bounced back in the 600 yard run to clock a 1:17.54 to finish 13th.

The Cougars ran two relay teams in the Jayhawk Classic getting a 9th place finish in the 4X400 meter and a 13th placing in the Distance Medley.  Robinson, James Johnson, Courtland Robinson, and Adu-Gyami comprised the 4X400 to finish in 3:25.78 while the Distance Medley team of Laari, Jamal Henson, Josh Watson, and Kole Stiner finished with a time of 11:22.29.

Brown was the lone jumper for the Cougars placing 25th in the Long Jump with a leap of 20-1 (6.12m).  Freshman Alireza Rafiei placed 14th in the Shot Put with a 42-5 (12.93m) throw while Colby Overturf and Dylan Moore finished in the 21st and 24th spots in the Weight Throw with 38-4 ¼ (11.69m) and 37-3 ¼ (11.36m) throws respectively.

The Cougars return to action on for the two-day Masked Rider Open held on Friday and Saturday at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
