Reyes captures national championship as Cougars wrap up season

The Barton Community College men's track and field team wrapped up its 2012-13 season Saturday at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship held in Hutchinson, Kansas.  The Barton men, who have won seven outdoor championships and finished in the top five in their previous eighteen national championship meets, battled injuries to score twenty-one points to finish fifteenth.

Tayron Reyes shined for the Cougars in both the prelims and finals winning the 800m in 1:52.59.  Also running on Barton's 4X100m relay team replacing injured David Winters, Reyes and the Cougar team of Christian Black, Brien Berry, and Rahim Conwell placed seventh in 42.50.  The Cougars had qualified for the finals placing sixth in Friday's prelims running a 40.54.

In the sprints the Cougars' Berry placed fifth in the 100m in 10.20 then improved to fourth in the 200m with a time of 20.80.  Winters, who qualified for the 100m finals running a 10.27, ran injured in the 200m prelims which caused his withdrawal from the event and for the final round of the 100m.   Conwell's 10.87 in 100m prelims did not qualify for the finals and was later disqualified for a false start in the 200m.

The 800m relay team of David Berry, Jamal Henson, Tyler Lumpkin, and Reyes ran well below their season best to finish in thirteenth place at 8:18.65.

In the field, the Cougars lone entry David Simmons surpassed his personal best throws but was ruled out of bounds and failed to qualify for the finals.
