6th ranked Barton tennis splits matches in Barton Classic #GoBarton

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team split its pair of matches hosting the Barton Classic held at the Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts.

Barton took on NJCAA foe and 9th ranked Iowa Central Community College in the morning match of the triangular, dispatching the Tritons 8-1. Following an afternoon layoff while Iowa Central played Newman University, the Cougars dropped two of the three doubles matches in an eventual 6-3 loss to the NCAA Division II member.

The Cougars' next action comes Thursday in traveling to Emporia State University in a 1:00 p.m. match.

The Cougars outscored the Tritons 24-13 in doubles play to jump out to a 3-0 match lead. The No. 1 tandem of Gustavo Campos/Tsholofelo Tsiang and the No. 3 duo of Eduardo Morais/Samyak Bajracharya each won 8-5 while the No. 2 group of James Kaoma/Barnabas Kalaba had prevailed 8-3.

Campos and Kaoma won the top two singles matches, Campos dispatching 33rd ranked Zamani Moyo 7-6(4) and 6-1 in the No. 1 matchup while Kaoma also won in straight sets in the No. 2 slot in a hard earned 7-6(5), 7-5 score over the Tritons' Nafiralo Souleymane Ouattara.

Barton also picked up straight set victories in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, Kalaba taking down 49th ranked Arthur Praud 6-3, 6-3, while Bajracharya defeated Nolan Laduree 6-4, 6-3.

The teams split the two matches going to tiebreak. Tsiang dropping the first set 6-4 to Theo Devals before winning the second 6-3 and rolling to a 10-3 tiebreak win.

Andrew Kunaka picked up the lone Iowa Central victory, winning the first set 6-3 to the Cougars' Morais but dropping the second 6-4 before coming out on top of a 10-8 tiebreak score.

Shuffling the lineup in a pair of the doubles tandems for the Jets matchup, the No. 3 duo of Tsiang/Bajracharya picked up the Cougars' lone doubles win 8-2 victory. Barton fell unfortunate in the top two slots by identical 8-6 scores, the No. 1 tandem of Campos/Morais and Kaoma/Kalaba dropping the No. 2 bout.

The Jets won four of the singles action as Barton's pair of victories came in the No. 3 and No. 5 slots. Morais won in twin 6-4 sets over Kurt Suarez Bruckner in the No. 3 as Bajracharya took care of Luca Penteado 8-1 in the No. 4.

Barton had a pair of near victories decided in the tiebreak. No. 1 singles player Campos dropped the first 6-3 but rallied for a 7-5 victory before falling 10-5 to Pedja Kolaric. Kalaba also fell short in the No. 4, gaining a set advantage with a 6-3 win but fell 7-5 and 10-5 to lose the match.

Kaoma went down in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, to Ali Mounir in the No. 2 action with Tsiang falling in the No. 5 spot by an 8-1 score to Andrea Bramati.
