The Barton Community College tennis program received a taste of what lies ahead in a month as the Cougars competed this past Friday against a nationally ranked jammed packed Southwest JUCO Tournament held in Plano, Texas.
Due to weather sweeping through the southwest on Saturday, the two-day tournament was cancelled for the final day but a weary team for of athletes left the courts late Friday evening having played four matches each.
Both Barton and the Cougars' next opponent Seward County Community College will have little rest from the Texas trip as the two squads conclude the conference regular season on Monday in a 12:00 p.m. first serve. Due to renovations still underway at Great Bend's Veterans Park, the men's matches will be played on the west courts of the park while the women's squads will head to Ellinwood for a tangle at the grade school tennis courts.
On the women's side 45th ranked Claudia Sumaia was the lone Cougar to garner a first round individual win as the squad had a plethora of high ranking first round match ups. Sumaia began her No. 3 singles day with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicole Maldonado before taking the first set 6-0 over 24th ranked Alena Macharova of Seward County but falling in the next two 6-3 and 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Sumaia was joined by doubles partner Gwendolen Sior in the No. 2 bracket as the duo marched into what would have been Saturday's title match if not for the weather with an 8-5 win over Laredo's Monika Cantu and Priscilla Morales before dispatching fellow Region VI members Aletta Macheli and Mariana Rodriguez of Cowley 8-4.
The Cougar men had a pair of first round individual victories. No. 5 slot Octavio Carrasco prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Cowley's Moises Sosa advancing to the semis but was on the wrong side of 6-2, 6-4 score to Tyler's Carlos Matarredona. Tinashe Muzenyi also picked up a first round win but also fell in the semis by dropping identical 6-3 set scores to Cowley's Casey Edwards.
Barton's No. 2 duo of Oswaldo Cano and Mariano Cabrera also reached the semis grinding out a tough 9-7 win over host Collin's Chris Doyal and John Edwards but had their run end 8-5 by the Tyler duo of Matt Beecher and Karl Mosterd.
Jarrett Bowman and Muzenyi won their lone bout in the No. 4 doubles play with victory over Cowley's tandem of Sosa and Moises Goncalves.
