The No. 16 ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team began play today at the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas. The Cougars came away from day one's action in 15th place with a victory in the No. 1 doubles match as Barton dropped six of its other seven scheduled matches for today. Barton will send two flights to the court on Tuesday for the first time, being joined by in the second round by the doubles team, with six flights beginning their quest for a back draw championship.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Marcel Miasato and Juan Navarro picked up the lone Cougar win of the day, upsetting the No. 25 ranked duo of Diego Leal and Taquel Lewis of Jones County 6-4, 6-4. The Cougars will next get to take on the fourth ranked pair of Eymeric Chevalier and Elvyn Nguyen of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Giovanni Fragalle took a hard luck loss in the No. 3 singles flight winning the first set 6-0 over College of DuPage's Charlie Mackh, before losing the next two sets by identical 6-4 scores. Fragalle and doubles partner Kaio Massao were locked into a 1-1 match 2-6, 6-4, before sickness struck Fragalle forcing the pair to retire the match.
No. 6 singles Ray Strunk and the No. 3 doubles duo of Juan Jaimes and Triston Herbst will see their first action on Tuesday as both flights received first round byes. Strunk will be the first Cougar to take the courts on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. followed by Miasato/Navarro duo first serve slated for 1:00 p.m. with Jaimes/Herbst finally getting on the court at 2:15 p.m. The No. 1 through No. 5 consolation singles will begin at 3:30 p.m. with No. 2 doubles consolation slated for 4:45 p.m.
