Ono and Martinez knock off nation’s top ranked doubles team as Cougar Tennis scores 6-3 win over No. 9 Seward County

The Barton Community College tennis men's team battled to a 3-3 match score but received three forfeit wins to pick up a 6-3 team victory over No. 9 Seward County Community College Saturday at the Great Bend's Veteran's Memorial Park tennis courts.  Barton improves to 1-1 on the season while the shorthanded Saints fall to 0-2.  Next up for the Barton will be a trip to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for two days of tough competition at the Seminole State College Trojan Classic being held April 4-5.

The Cougars No. 1 doubles tandem of Vinicius Ono and Alvaro Martinez knocked off the nation's top ranked doubles team of Ronzai Saurombe and Alejandro Gonzalez 8-4.  Competing for the first time together this season, the duo's victory over the 2013 ITA National Champions was the biggest doubles win in recent Barton history.   The doubles match of the day came in the No. 2 slot as Seward's Trevor Kipping and Colin Gassman held off and outlasted the Cougars' Austin Jacobs and Chase Buntain 9-8 (7-3).  Barton's Jeret Johnson and Nicholas Moyers received the forfeit victory in the No. 3 match due to Seward not fielding a team.

Ono, the brother of women's No. 1 singles player Karina Ono, continued his Barton debut with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 10 ranked Saurombe.   Seward's No. 41 ranked Gonzalez picked up the Saints first singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Cougars' Martinez.  In the No. 3 singles the Saints' Kipping earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Cougars' Johnson while Barton's Moyers fought for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Seward's Glassman.  Jacobs and Buntain received the No. 5 and No. 6 match win by forfeiture.
