Barton Men leap to third heading into final day at NJCAA Championships #GoBarton

The Barton Community College men's swimming team established themselves in prime trophy position in day three action at the NJCAA National Swimming & Diving Championships.

Entering the day in fourth place trailing Iowa Central Community College by 12.5 points, the Cougars landed eight podium finishes outscoring the Tritons 168 to 113 on the day netting a now 42.5 third place advantage heading into Saturday's final six events. Host school Indian River State College leads the team standings with 1031 points while Southwestern Oregon Community College holds a 118.5 advantage over Barton in the second slot.

Final day action is scheduled to get underway Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. (CT) from the Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex held in Fort Pierce, Florida.

As a team, the Cougars mended one new program record, 16 new personal best marks, two season best times and 10 new program top-10 best times in which nine coming in the evening's finals portion. 

Fresh off a repeat national championship in Monday's 50-breaststroke, Johan Cue Carrillo suffered heartbreak in Friday's 100-breaststroke falling .06 seconds short of a second repeat chance as the sophomore settled for a national runner-up finish clocking a season best time of 53.70 leading Barton to its' highest individual performance. Carrillo manufactured the third quickest time in the program record books posting the seventh fastest prelim time in the 100 IM before settling for an eighth-place finish in the nightcap turning in 55.72 clocking.

Jethro Irvine and Josias Solarte manufactured the Cougars' next highest finishes with fifth place performances in the 100-backstroke and 200-butterfly respectfully. Irvine pieced together a new personal best stoppage of 51.61 in the morning's 100-backstroke prelims leaping up the program record books as the third fastest performance. Swimming to the fourth fastest time in the morning's 200-butterfly, Solarte slipped back a spot finishing fifth despite improving his prelim time by .98 seconds touching the wall in 1:53.08.

Enzo Vogt da Silva produced the lone program record breaker as the freshman turned in his best performance of the week rewriting his prior program top time with a 4:38.17 sixth place finish in the 500-freestyle.

Barton concluded the strong day with a national runner-up finish in the lone team event as the four pack of Irvine, Carrillo, Solarte and Tyler Woodworth swam to the program's third fastest 200-Medley relay time of 1:31.60.
