The 20th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team rode an early second half surge Wednesday afternoon earning a hard fought 2-1 victory over Dodge City Community College at Memorial Stadium.
The Cougars move to 2-1-0 in conference play and improve their season mark to 4-1-0 while the Conquistadors drop to 0-3-0 in league play and 0-3-0 overall. Barton's next test will come Saturday as the Cougars return home for a cross conference tilt with the Cavaliers of Johnson County. First kick is slated for 4:00 p.m. from the Barton Soccer Complex.
The first half was a defensive struggle as neither squad found the back of the net while the Cougars outshoot the Conquistadors on frame 6-1 in the opening 45-minutes.
The shoutout would not last much into the second half as Pasquale Degaetano fired a rocket past the Conquistadors keeper Marco Galardini and three defenders off a rebound shot on goal from Cesar Rodriquez giving Barton the 1-0 lead just 38-second in.
Just 5:05 later Felipe D'Agostini fired the knockout blow lasering his fourth of the season from outside the far side of the 18' off Hesron Barry's throw in pass jetting Barton to the 2-0 lead with 39:17 to play.
While the Cougar defense was lock down for the opening 20-minutes of the second half, Dodge City managed to get on the board, cutting things in half as Christopher Quijanas found the net off Manoel Moraes perfect pass cutting the Barton lead in half.
The Cougar defense held sturdy pitching a shutout over the final 25-minutes holding off any Conquistador rally attempt.
