Shootout ends Barton soccer season for second straight year

The Barton Community College men's soccer team had their season come to an end Sunday at the Cougar Soccer Complex battling to a 110 minute scoreless gridlock before Garden City Community College earned the win with a 6-5 penalty kick advantage.  Having defeated Garden City twice already in the regular season, the West Division second seeded Cougars were bit for the second consecutive year on a shootout to end the season, finishing at 13-2-1 while the West's fourth seeded Broncbusters improve to 12-9-1 advancing to Friday's District playoffs in Oklahoma.

In a physical defensive battle, each goalkeeper came up with big saves throughout the game as the Cougars' Bruce Turner came up with five while Garden City's John Avalos rejected seven as Barton outshot the Broncbusters nine to seven on frame. 

Garden City drew first in penalty kicks with Sebastian Arrigada burying his shot near post while Benjamin Zamora sent his to the net far post.  The second round featured a pair of missiles past the keeper as Matheus De Silva's far post was just barely out of the diving Turner's reach while the Cougars' Lucas Alves' shot was dead center.

With Turner changing defense location along the goal line, Garden City team captain Humberto Smith paused to settle his thoughts before squeezing a near post shot by Turner.  Mario Ramirez stepped up next for the Cougars but his blast towards the upper-30 was within an inch too high banging off the crossbar giving the Broncbusters the 3-2 edge.

Jesus Maytoreno-Morena had a chance to increase the lead to two but Turner rejected the far post shot before team captain Vinicius Monteiro buried a near post equalizer to keep things deadlocked.

Totally confusing Turner in the fourth round, Abraham de la Mora drilled his left footed shot near post but Kota Endo answered the call fooling Avalos down the center.

With Turner being outguessed again, Saul Godoy kept the pressure on with a low shot down the middle bringing Julio Vicente to the twelve yard mark with the game on his shoulders.  With a hard charge to the ball, Vicente read Avalos' dive to near post allowing the freshman's blast to far post keeping the game alive.

Signifying the Cougars' frustration throughout the game, Turner appeared to come up the save of the day with a two-hand block of Mary Avalos' near post shot but the force of the ball deflected into goal.  Having been awarded a future trip to a dentist due to a hard foul earlier in the contest, Jose Escobedo's shot to near post was rejected by Avalos setting up a frenzied opponent's celebration on the Cougars' home turf for the second straight year.
