Unbeaten no longer, Cougars take first loss in 2-1 defeat

Two streaks were on the line Tuesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex for the Barton Community College men's soccer team and unfortunately the Cougars were on the short end of both losing 2-1 to Pratt Community College.  Unable to take advantage of a 25 mph first half wind, the Cougars saw the Beavers utilize it for two second half goals in the first fourteen minutes defeating the Cougars for the third straight year, as well as, knocking Barton from the ranks of the unbeaten.   The loss drops the Cougars to 1-1 in conference play and 6-1 overall while Pratt remains unbeaten in conference play at 3-0 and 4-1 on the season.  Barton will have a couple days rest before hosting the junior varsity squad from Bethany College on Friday in a 3:00 p.m. kick.

Barton outplayed the Beavers for most of the contest but couldn't convert its scoring chances and paid the consequences.  After getting only one shot away in the first half, Pratt came out firing early in the second breaking the scoreless tie three minutes in as Declan Fitzpatrick found the net off of Julio Velmas' assist.   Eleven minutes later Lewis Verdow found Jordan Stubbings and the Beavers had a commanding two goal lead with the wind at their back.

The Cougars pretty much shut down any further Pratt attacks but offensively couldn't break through until reigning two-time conference player of the week Renan Sousa's blast deflected off keeper Erwin Alvarez and Matt Sherrod stuffed the rebound in with only forty-two seconds remaining.
