Barton soccer makes statement with decisive victory at Cowley

No longer will the Barton Community College men's soccer team fly under the KJCCC radar as the Cougars made an early season statement Saturday in Arkansas City, Kansas, scoring five unanswered goals in a 5-1 win at Cowley College.  The Cougars remain spotless on the season at 6-0 with their conference opener while dropping Cowley to 1-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall.  Next up for Barton will be Pratt Community College, a recent thorn in the side of the Cougars with two straight losses to the Beavers.  Kick-off for Tuesday's match-up is 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.

Tabbed as a big early season conference test for each team especially with Cowley's 1-0 eye-opening victory at Dodge City Community College last Wednesday, the Tigers drew first blood scoring midway through the first half.

Kota Endo came through with the equalizer from Alejandro Diaz's first assist of season as Cougars tied it up with thirteen minutes remaining in the half. Seven minutes later Jiro Barriga Toyama put the Cougars ahead for good scoring the winner on Renan Sousa's first of three assists for 2-1 halftime advantage.

The Cougars kept the momentum rolling into the second frame building the lead out to two as Orel Taib found the net off of Endo's corner kick as just five minutes worked off the clock.

Barton put the game away with two goals within ten minutes, the first coming from Sousa finding Jaime Cox for his second career goal coming at the twelve minute mark.  Just under ten minutes later, the reigning conference player of the week again was the catalyst aiding Matt Sherrod's first goal of the season with only 2:50 remaining.
