Sousa and Turner earn KJCCC men’s soccer player of the week awards

Two Barton Community College men's soccer players earned conference honors for their performances last week. Awarded weekly to outstanding performances, in a competitive battle for the honors Renan Sousa was voted the KJCCC Player of the Week while Bruce Turner earned the Goalkeeper of the Week honor.

Sophomore Renan Sousa had a historic weekend posting hat tricks in consecutive games becoming just the second Cougar to dish out three assists in one game followed by scoring three goals in the next game.  Beginning his week with the game winning assist in Thursday's 5-1 victory over the Sterling College junior varsity, Sousa followed with assisting three of Barton's four goals in Saturday's 4-0 victory at Oklahoma Wesleyan University junior varsity as teammate Lucas Alves scored three goals.  Sousa and Alves' dual hat trick performances marked the fourth time in the storied history of Barton men's soccer for the occasion. One day later, Sousa achieved another hat trick by scoring three of the Cougars' first four goals in the 7-0 win at Southwestern Christian University junior varsity.

Stat wise, freshman Bruce Turner didn't put up glaring stats in his 135 minutes of play but did keep the net clean during his watch.  The key orchestrator for a young Cougar defensive back line, Turner helped prevent shots towards goal utilizing his defense, as well as, made two key saves in Saturday's 4-0 win and multiple quality decisions in breaking up threatening crosses.

Barton, now 5-0-0 on the season coming off of Wednesday's 7-3 win over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, will begin conference play on Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. key early season battle with Cowley College in Arkansas City, KS.
