Vargas becomes 6-time weekly conference award winner
Barton Community College men’s soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. Vargas and his Cougar defense earned the award for the sixth time this season and tenth overall in Vargas’ two year career. Vargas made numerous solid saves in preserving the No. 20 Cougars 2-1 win over Neosho County Community College to advance to the Region VI semifinals. Vargas’ task, much like Neosho’s goalkeeper in the first half, was made exceptionally difficult in the second half fighting against a sustained 45mph wind and the region playoff pressure to secure the win.

Crowned co-champions of the Jayhawk Conference last week, the region's second seeded Cougars improved to 11-4-1 on the season and advance to Thursday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal game at Topeka's Hummer Sports Complex against the 11-8-0 Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds. Barton came out on top 2-0 in a hard fought victory back on September 12 in Concordia and will rematch the 2011 Region VI semifinals when the T-birds won 4-0 and went on to win the NJCAA title. Top seeded Coffeyville Community College will play the 4:00 p.m. semifinal against 12-6-0 Johnson County Community College with the championship game slated at 12:00 p.m. Friday.
