Vargas named men’s soccer KJCCC goalkeeper of the week for third time this season

Barton Community College men's soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this season.  Vargas saved four shots on goal in Sunday's 4-1 win over Neosho County Community College, bringing his season total to 48 and an eighty-seven save percentage.   Neosho's lone goal came on a one-on-one situation set up by a stellar half-volley from Diego Benitez to David Bustos who beat Vargas on the far post in early second half action.

Earning the honor for the seventh time in his Cougar career, Vargas also was named the NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week in week four.  For the season Vargas and the Cougar defense headlined by fellow returning first-team all-conference defender Carter Way have helped guide the Cougars to the top of the Jayhawk standings at 6-1-0 and a 7-1-1 record on the season.

Barton will step out of conference play this weekend as the Cougars travel to Dallas, Texas, for two matches against nationally ranked teams before returning home for an October 8 conference game against Independence Community College.
