Streak snapped, Coffeyville upsets No. 19 Cougar soccer

For the first time since 2007, the Barton Community College men's soccer team took a home loss as Coffeyville Community College shutout the Cougars 2-0 Sunday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.  The loss drops the No. 19 ranked Cougars to 1-1 in conference play and 2-1-1 overall as the Red Ravens improve to 3-0 in conference and 5-1 on the season.  Barton will look to rebound with two road games in the upcoming week beginning this Thursday at Cloud County Community College followed by a Sunday contest at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Playing with a 10-15 mph wind at their backs, the Red Ravens' Paulo Vac Claudio took advantage of a defensive misplay to beat Barton keeper Mauricio Vargas with a an isolated goal with 28:28 to play in the first half.  Coffeyville continued to assault the Barton defense in first half play putting up eleven shots to the Cougars' two.

Barton was able to launch seventeen shots in the second half with only three on goal, not including two hitting the crossbar. With both teams narrowly missing goals, Coffeyville was able to put the icing on the victory as Vac Claudio scored his second of the day with 19:13 remaining.

The Cougars' loss snaps a 39-game home win streak and is the first home loss since Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa pulled the 2-1 upset on September 19, 2007.  Barton did suffer a more recent defeat in the 2010 season, however it came on the turf at Great Bend High School when the Cougars lost back-to-back games August 28 and 29 against Iowa Western Community College and North Iowa Area College respectively.  Otero Junior College nearly achieved the streak buster last season as the Cougars and Rattlers played to a two-all draw.
