No. 14 ranked Barton Community College men's soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week.  Vargas, a sophomore from Jersey City, New Jersey, was stellar in goal against two nationally recognized opponents as the Cougars went 1-0-1 this past weekend in Cheyenne, WY.  Vargas helped hold both No. 18 Laramie County Community College and nationally receiving votes Otero Junior College scoreless making ten saves in 135 minutes of play.  Working among an inexperienced back line defense with three newcomers to the Cougar lineup, Vargas' leadership and knowledge of the game allowed his domination of the defensive field.

The conference honor marks the fifth time Vargas has won the weekly award after winning four times last season.  As a freshman Vargas help lead the Cougars to a 16-3-1 record and No. 6 national ranking enroute to earning first team All-Jayhawk Conference honors.

Barton will next play an exhibition contest Friday versus Fort Hays State University kicking off at 8:00 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium.  The Cougars will begin conference play September 5 at Cowley College before their home opener on September 8 versus Coffeyville Community College.
