20th ranked Barton Men's Golf places 5th at Jayhawk Championships; Gehring earns 2nd Team All-KJCCC #GoBarton

The 20th ranked Barton Community College men's golf team placed fifth Tuesday in the Jayhawk Championships held at Newton's Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

The Cougars completed Monday's first round with a 304 to sit in fourth place of the eight team field then despite an improved afternoon round of 304 slipped to the fifth spot. Closing with a 318 on Tuesday, Barton finished with a combined 67-over 931 to trail Kansas City Kansas Community College by twenty-five strokes but well ahead of sixth place Fort Scott's 113-over 977.

Barton men's golfers Tom Gehring and Pontus Nordstrom Pontus Nordstrom led the Cougars with an 8-over 224 to place tied for 12th overall of the fifty-man field.  Opening with a morning round of 5-over, Nordstrom played even par in the second round before finishing with a 3-over.

Flirting with a top-15 standing after 77 and 74 Monday rounds, Tom Gehring fell to the 27th overall position with a closing 82 for a combined 17-over 233. Despite the final round, Gehring's season efforts earned a top ten standing in being named 2nd team All-KJCCC for the 2022 season..

Ethan Bonnett also got out of the gates well, posting a morning round of 3-over to tie for tenth before tumbing down the leaderboard on 81 and 82 rounds but finished on a high note with a chip-in birdie on his last hole to land in 31st place at 22-over 238.  Two shots behind was Carlos Hamou in 32nd place at 24-over 240 following rounds of 75-81-82.

Carding 82 and 83 rounds on Monday, Tom Lehmann celebrated his birthday on Tuesday as one of two Cougars cracking 80 with a solid 79 to move up the final board into a 34th place tie at 28-over 244. 

Also making a Tuesday move up the standings, Marshall Woolf was the most consistent of the six Cougar entries, carding 86-84-84 rounds for a final 39th place tie at 41-over 254.

Barton will next enter post-season competing in the Region VI/Central District Championships held Monday and Tuesday, April 25-26, at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, NE.

Hutchinson Community College won its second straight meet as the 3rd ranked Blue Dragons finished 12-under for a combined 852 to distance runner-up 12th ranked Garden City Community College's 17-over 881 and 11th ranked Dodge City Community College's 21-over 885.
