No. 24 Cougars roll into region quarterfinals with impressive win
The No. 24 Barton Community College men’s basketball team rolled into the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament with an easy 93-61 win over Allen Community College in first round action Saturday afternoon at the Barton Gym. The third seeded Cougars out of the Jayhawk West jumped out to a 15-5 lead just five minutes into the contest and were never challenged by the Jayhawk East’s sixth seeded Red Devils. With the win Barton improves to 26-5 while ending Allen’s season at 6-25. The Cougars will travel to Arkansas City for a quarterfinal matchup against the Jayhawk East’s second seeded Cowley College. The 21-10 Tigers defeated the West’s seventh seed Pratt Community College 67-49 Saturday evening. Game time for the quarterfinal matchup at the William S. Scott Auditorium 7:00 p.m. with full Barton Sports broadcast.
For the second straight game, Barton had two players record double-double performances as all Cougars who played scored. Freshman Raheem Johnson scored twenty points and grabbed fourteen rebounds to post his third double-double of the season. Sophomore Andell Cumberbatch recorded his tenth double-double in the last seventeen games and the eleventh of his career by scoring eighteen points and grabbing thirteen rebounds to go along with three steals. Sophomore Algie Key scored fourteen points while leading game honors with seven assists and four steals. Sophomore Turon Parker rounded out the double-digit scoring with twelve points and dishing out four assists.
DeAndrae Barnette was the lone Red Devil to reach double-figures as twelve players hit the scoring column for Allen.
