Key’s last second shot gives Cougars win to secure Jayhawk West third seed
Getting a driving layup from sophomore Algie Key with 1.5 seconds remaining, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team escaped Sunday with 67-65 win at Colby Community College. The win improves Barton to 11-4 in conference and 24-5 overall and secures the Cougars’ third seed from the Jayhawk West for the upcoming Region VI Tournament. Colby drops to eighth in the conference standings at 3-12 and 12-17 overall. Barton will conclude the regular season Wednesday in Concordia as the Cougars take on the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds in a 8:00 p.m. contest.
Algie Key led four Cougars in scoring with seventeen points and seven assists. Key also moved into the sixth spot on Barton's all-time scoring list with 1140 points passing Shawn Copes' 1135 point mark set during the 1989-1991 seasons and drawing to within eight points of Ebi Ere's 1148 points set during the 1999-2001 seasons. Andell Cumberbatch and Turon Parker each scored fifteen points and led the Cougar rebounding effort with eight rebounds each. Freshman Raheem Johnson followed his previous night's career high with ten points and six rebounds to go along with three blocked shots in only twenty-five minutes of play.
Kris Rolle led the Colby scoring with a double-double seventeen point fourteen rebound performance. Jeremiah Ingram scored sixteen while Terry Starks added fourteen points and eight rebounds.
