Explosive second half erase first half deficit as No. 9 Cougars dispatch Butler 73-64
Erasing a five-point halftime deficit with a forty-five second half outburst, the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s basketball team defeated Butler Community College 73-64 at the Barton Gym Saturday night. The Jayhawk West battle was two tales of halves as the Cougars heated up for 54.5% shooting and outscored the Grizzlies by twenty-four points in the second half at the free throw line. Concluding their four-game seven-day stretch Barton improves to 3-1 in conference play and 16-2 overall while Butler drops to 1-2 and 13-4 overall. The Cougars will face their biggest test of the season on Wednesday as they travel to Hutchinson to take on the undefeated No. 2 ranked Blue Dragons at 7:30 p.m at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson, 3-0 in conference and 17-0 overall, are expected to move into the nation’s top spot this week with the release of the latest NJCAA poll.
Algie Key led the Cougar scoring with twenty-one points on five-of-eleven from the field and eleven-of-twelve from the charity stripe. Andell Cumberbatch posted his fourth double-double of the season and third in the last four games with eighteen points and fourteen rebounds. Kevin Kuteyi scored ten points with eight coming in the first half to spark a late run to cut the Cougar deficit to six.
Shomari Triggs was the lone Grizzly in double-figures scoring twenty-one while also leading Butler with three assists. Trent Richardson led rebounding with eight boards and just missed double-figures with nine points.
