Cougars make it two in row over top of West with win over Dodge
Somebody forgot to tell the Barton County Community College men’s basketball team its has nothing to play for. Down to just 9 players and no post-season in the future, Barton County is playing its best basketball for quite some time. The Cougars made it 2 in a row over the top teams in the Jayhawk West with a 54-48 win over Dodge City at the Barton County Gym Wednesday night. Dodge City came into the contest leading the West and left in a tie with Cloud County. The same Cloud County team that Barton handed its 1st home loss to just last Saturday. Barton led much of the contest and did not trail nearly the entire 2nd half. The Cougars moved to 18-11 overall on the season and 6-9 in the West. Dodge City falls to 20-9 and 10-5.

Highlights
Barton came out to start the 2nd half by scoring the 5 points of the half for a 28-24 lead. Dodge momentarily recaptured that lead at 30-28 but Barton followed with a 6-0 run take a lead the Cougars would not again lose. Other than a Thiago Cordeiro layup, the Barton run consisted of entirely free throws. During the 2nd half, Barton knocked down 15-of-26 free throws. That proved to be the difference in the contest. In the opening half, Barton was just 0-for-1. Dodge City was 13-of-20 for the game.
The Cougar lead grew to 43-34 following a Shaun James layup with 7:38 to play in the contest. Dodge would spend the next 5 minutes trying to catch the Cougars and finally cut the margin to 49-46 with 2:12 to play. Dodge had one shot at tying the game following that, but the 3-pointer bounded long and Dodge would not get closer than those 3 points. Barton hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
It was the 1st time since the opening of conference play that Barton has strung together back-to-back wins. Since dropping to just 9 players, the Cougars have lost a close 3-point contest at Butler then notched the wins over the West frontrunners.
Cordeiro led Barton with 15 points during the contest, followed by Joel Stucky with 13 and Reggie Love with 10. Ivan Evans had 9 points and a game-high 9 rebounds for the Cougars as well as a game-high 5 assists.
The Cougars will look for their 3rd straight win when Seward County pays a visit to the Barton County Gym Saturday night for Hall of Fame night at Barton.
